Vikings took to battle at Rockingham Castle

Families and history-lovers enjoyed the fearsome Vikings at Rockingham Castle as temperatures soared to record levels this August Bank Holiday weekend.

During the two hottest days of the year so far, the Vikings of Middle England performed realistic battles in their authentic warrior armour as crowds cheered.

The Living History Village, where tradesmen displayed their skills, making weapons and coins, weaving nets and brewing medicines, was also a hit among visitors.

Thanking the performers, one visitor said:

What a fabulous day. They were all absolute troupers performing and being so hospitable and open with their wisdom and knowledge in the immense heat. I went away with a smile on my face and a warmth in my heart feeling educated and entertained.

Castle owner, James Saunders-Watson said: “We’ve been welcoming the Vikings of Middle England at Rockingham for 24 years, and this year we had the biggest ever turnout – with over 60 warriors on our battlefields. Archery and popular storytellers also added to the excitement and atmosphere, and once again we’re delighted to have put on such an entertaining and enjoyable event.

“We had wonderful feedback from families who spent the whole afternoon with us, and our historic gardens provided much-needed shade from the sunshine.”

The upcoming outdoor cinema experience – the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Friday 6th September and Bohemian Rhapsody on Saturday 7th September – will mark the end of the castle’s spring/summer events.

James added: “We have had an incredible event season this year with so many highlights. We are looking forward to hosting the outdoor cinema events in a few weeks and are already taking bookings for our very popular Halloween spectacular and Victorian Christmas too.”
